Computer puzzle may ease post-traumatic stress

Add caption
LONDON (Reuters) - Playing Tetris, rated one of the greatest video games of all time, immediately after traumatic events appears to reduce flashbacks that plague sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a British study.

The preliminary findings could lead to new treatments to prevent or cut flashbacks that are a hallmark of the condition, also known as PTSD, Oxford University researchers said.

"This is only a first step in showing that this might be a viable approach to preventing post traumatic stress disorder," Emily Holmes, a psychologist who led the study, said.

"This was a pure science experiment about how the mind works from which we can try to understand the bigger picture," Holmes said in a statement.

PTSD can often stem from wartime trauma such as being wounded or seeing others hurt or killed.

Symptoms range from irritability and outbursts of anger to sleep difficulties, trouble concentrating, extreme vigilance and an exaggerated startle response. People also can persistently relive the traumatic event.

The Oxford team showed a film to 40 healthy volunteers that included traumatic images of injury from several sources, including advertisements on the dangers of drunk driving.

INTERFERENCE WITH SENSORY MEMORIES?

After waiting 30 minutes, half the people played Tetris for 10 minutes while the others did nothing. Those who played the game had far fewer flashbacks to the film over the next week.

The game involves manipulating shapes composed of square blocks that fall down the screen to create a horizontal line of blocks without gaps. When a line is created it disappears.

The researchers believe that recognizing the shapes and moving the coloucoloredred building blocks around in the computer game competes with the visions of trauma retained in the sensory part of the brain.

This process may somehow interfere with the way sensory memories are formed in the period following trauma and reduces the number of flashbacks experienced later on, they said this week in the Public Library of Science Journal PLoS ONE.

"We know there is a period of up to six hours in which it is possible to affect certain types of memories that are laid down in the human mind," Catherine Deeprose, who worked on the study, added in a statement.

"We have shown that in healthy volunteers, playing Tetris in this time window can reduce flashback-type memories without wiping out the ability to make sense of the event."

Footloose’ goes country: A look at the remake’s soundtrack
By: Jen Chaney

The recent trailer for the upcoming, long-delayed remake of 1984’s “Footloose”  set off alarm bells for people who still have fond memories of the original film, Kevin Bacon’s spirited portrayal of Ren MacCormack and the harmonious sound of Mike Reno and Ann Wilson crooning “Almost Paradise.”

Well, Entertainment Weekly has gotten its hands on the song listing for the soundtrack to said remake. And let’s just say that more alarm bells may be sounded for some, as neither Deniece Williams nor Sammy Hagar will be involved this go ’round.

With a couple of exceptions, the soundtrack for “Footloose” 2011 appears to have been notably countrified, with updated songs from the first film as well as brand-new tunes.

So country star Blake Shelton of NBC’s “The Voice” will be singing the title song, replacing Kenny Loggins. Ella Mae Bowen, a 15-year-old singer-songwriter from South Carolina, will re-do Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero.” Jana Kramer, a country singer and actress whom you may recall from both “One Tree Hill” and her brief stint as Smash Williams’s girlfriend Noelle on “Friday Night Lights,” will take on “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.” As for Mike Reno and Ann Wilson’s “Almost Paradise” duties, those will be handled by fresh-faced duo Victoria Justice and Hunter Hayes.

Other artists on the soundtrack include Big & Rich, Zac Brown, the decidedly non-twangy Smashing Pumpkins and Shelton’s fellow “Voice” judge Cee Lo Green, who will sing a song called “Walkin’ Blues” with some help from Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Now, no one expected the makers of the new “Footloose” to dredge up every old ’80s song from the original. But the first movie had a much more rock-pop-rebellious attitude to it, or at least what passed for rock-pop rebellion in a movie released in 1984 and set in what Hollywood conceived of as a typical small town. Hence, I’m not sure how I feel about the “country strong” vibe of the new soundtrack.

I mean, if you’re going to involve Cee Lo in this venture, why not have the dude belt out “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” or — ooh, even better — an update of Shalamar’s “Dancing in the Sheets”? (Am I the only person who still loves “Dancing in the Sheets”? Seriously, it can’t be just me: That song contains a “Freakazoid-”style robot vocal and some quality ’80s double-clapping.)

How do you feel about the new “Footloose” soundtrack? Think it has potential or are you suddenly pining for the days of “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man)”?

30 Days With Google+: Day 14

For many Google+ pioneers, one of the most redeeming qualities of the nascent social network was the lack of games. The bad news is that it didn't last long, though, because now Google+ does have games. The good news is that Google+ is using a different approach that should make the games less annoying for those who choose not to partake.
At the top of the Google+ screen there are five icons to click on. From left to right, they are Home, Photos, Profile, Circles, and Games. When I click on the Games icon, I am taken to the Games screen which has a huge rotating banner of "Featured Games". On the left, there are links for Featured Games, All Games, and Game Notifications, and below that a section that shows games I have recently played.
What I Like

I've been on Facebook long enough to get my share of "Join my Mafia Wars family" requests from friends and family. I have learned to deplore many games, including Mafia Wars, FarmVille, and CityVille, and developed a healthy distaste for Zynga without having ever even played any of the developer's games.
I understand some people love the social gaming aspect of social networking, but I don't really. So, as far as I'm concerned your polite invitation for me to join your game is just spam getting in the way of my social networking.

Thankfully, Google+ has learned a thing or two from the backlash on other social networks, and it has implemented games in a way that lets social gamers enjoy all of the things they like about gaming on a social network, without imposing on the social networking activities of those who aren't interested in the games.

A post from the Official Google Blog explains, "When you're ready to play, the Games page is waiting--click the games button at the top of your stream. You can see the latest game updates from your circles, browse the invites you've received and check out games that people you know have played recently. The Games page is also where your game accomplishments will appear. So you can comfortably share your latest high score--your circles will only see the updates when they're interested in playing games too.

In a nutshell, gamers can still game, and non-gamers can still use their social networks without being spammed. I may still get invites to various social networking games, but they won't clog my Google+ Stream. The only way I will see invite notifications, or updates from people in my Circles about their latest gaming achievements and exploits is if I go to the Games page myself.
What I Don't Like
There are two things that stood out for me as things that make me want to steer clear of Google+ games. The first is lag, and the second is privacy.

I have Angry Birds (and Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio) on my iPhone and my iPad, so I thought I would give it a whirl in Google+ Games. I have to admit that it was sort of cool being able to see how others in my Circles scored on each level and introduce some competitive spirit. But, as the game progressed, it got progressively slower and had significant lag.
Granted, this is a problem with Web-based games in general, and not necessarily unique to Google+. I don't know if the problem is with Google+, or my ISP, or my PC, or my choice of browser (in my defense, though--I was using Chrome), but the game got to the point where it was essentially unplayable.
Shooting a bird from a slingshot is a simple matter of choosing a trajectory and dragging the mouse and then everything else just happens. With other games, though, the lag could impact precision and response time and make games very frustrating and annoying.
The second issue I have is with the permissions games ask for regarding access to my social network. I thought that Dragon Age Legends looked like a cool game to check out, so I clicked on it. The Bioware game requested permission to view basic information about my account, view my email address, and view a list of people from my Circles, ordered based on my interactions with them across Google.

I'm sorry, what? Why? I just want to play a game--we're not getting married. Why is it Bioware's business who I communicate with on Google+, or what interactions I have with my Circles across other Google sites and services? Why does Bioware need access to my email address?

Instead of just listing out the permissions being requested, the developer should be required to also explain each one. I'd like to know what each permission has to do with playing the game, and how my granting permission will enhance or facilitate the game. If the developer can't tell me how the permissions will impact or improve the game I am trying to play, then I am not granting permission.
The Verdict

Admittedly, I am not one who generally chooses to partake in online game or social networking games. Don't get me wrong--I play my share of games. I am not a hardcore gamer per se, but I have two folders of games segregated by category on my iPhone and iPad because I have too many game apps to fit in a single folder. I have my own Xbox 360 with Kinect because I want to be able to play Madden Football without having to share console time with my kids.

I just prefer my games to just be games. I am not even a privacy fanatic. I willingly accept the tradeoff between privacy and functionality for many aspects of mobile and social networking. I draw the line, though, and giving game developers unnecessary access to sensitive information.

The bottom line for me with Google+ Games is that Google has definitely improved on the basic concept. There are still some things I don't like about it, but at least Google has structured it so that I don't have to be bothered with it at all if I choose not to.

The tech world was rocked earlier this week when Google announced its purchase of Motorola Mobility, but that was nothing compared with the bombshell HP dropped today. HP announced in one fell swoop that it is abandoning both the PC and mobile device markets. PCs will live on, but the demise of WebOS eliminates what should have been a major player in the mobile field.

Not quite seven weeks ago HP launched the WebOS-based TouchPad tablet with great fanfare and high hopes. It was immediately hit with customer backlash over poor performance, and received tepid reviews. HP cut the price three or four times in the course of a week and still couldn't drive demand, leading Best Buy to complain about being stuck with hundreds of thousands of unsold TouchPads and demanding that HP buy them back.

HP TouchPadHP pulled the plug so quickly it seems like it was just looking for an excuse to bail on WebOS.WebOS will go down in history as the mobile OS that was technically capable--or even superior--but just couldn't find the right combination of vision, hardware, and marketing to capture any interest in the market. When HP bought the flailing Palm, many thought it would be just the thing WebOS needed to compete head to head with Apple's iOS and Google's Android. We can see how well that worked out.

WebOS could have been a contender. WebOS should have been a contender. HP had the financial resources, marketing muscle, and corporate presence to develop and promote WebOS and take the reins from RIM as the de facto mobile OS for business. Instead, it launched a half-baked tablet, scrambled around for seven weeks with no coherent marketing vision, and threw in the towel without even putting up a decent fight.

HP was forced to look at the mobile landscape and decide that it just isn't capable of competing, so instead it pulled the plug on WebOS and the TouchPad...and then there were three. There are a ton of tablets out there, but when you step back and look at the big picture there is really just the iPad, Android, and Windows.

You could debate that the BlackBerry PlayBook with its QNX OS is a fourth option, but I disagree. The PlayBook has not fared much better than the TouchPad, and RIM itself is on life support. I won't be surprised if the company isn't around this time next year, but in the meantime it should follow HP's lead and bail out of the tablet market to focus on its core business.

Right now, and for the immediate future, the tablet market is really just the iPad market. It is a one-horse race where Apple is really only competing against itself while HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and others scramble around fighting for a second place that makes up a fraction of a fraction of the iPad market.

When Windows 8 hits the street, it may be able to give Apple some competition. The convergence of Windows across smartphones, tablets, and PCs will make a compelling proposition for many businesses and consumers if Microsoft gets it right.

Only time will tell. R.I.P. WebOS.

Teronggok terpaku pikiranku
Lengang bingung dan menakutkan
Kubiarkan waktu perlahan menggilas semuanya
Menaifkan impian kehidupan yang sesaat kan menyata
Rintik hujan malam kian mengencang lintasi kegelapan
Kidung-kidung jiwa kini sunyi senyap sepi
Sibak kerudung dendam yang dulu pernah pergi
Dahaga takhta mahkota semakin meraja direlung rasa keabadian luka
Terhempas gelombang ditengah lautan samudra ego yang tercipta
Setelah sampai disini
Lebih menikmati proses hidup
